Experience in Counselling For Children
My name is Michelle Bowman and I am a Counsellor offering Psychotherapy to clients of all ages. I have a particular interest in counselling children, teenagers and young adults and I currently work as a Wellbeing Practitioner in a Secondary School and Sixth Form College in East Sussex. My work there is 3 days per week, facilitating 1:1 psychotherapy and counselling sessions for children and young adults who attend the school. I have also worked as a Counsellor for children at the Talk2Us Service of the YMCA, Tunbridge Wells.
My experience includes working therapeutically with children between the ages of 12 and 19. I have also worked with teenagers and young adults in school settings in different roles since 2008. Working with young people is incredibly rewarding. I firmly believe that if more young people had access to mental health services, fewer would go on to develop more serious and long term mental health issues in adulthood.
Psychotherapy and Counselling for Children Tunbridge Wells
My private Psychotherapy and Counselling Practice is based in Pembury, Tunbridge Wells. I work from a warm and welcoming room in my home and my hours of work mean that I can see school age children out of school hours. I have an up to date DBS (formerly CRB) certificate which I can provide on request. All of my work is monitored by a UKCP registered Supervisor.
Free Initial Consultation
It is really important for any client to find the right person to work with for them as an individual, which is why I offer a Free Initial Consultation. For younger children, it can also be helpful for the parent to come along for a small part of the consultation. This offers both the young person and their parent/caregiver an opportunity to ask questions, get a feel for how I work and agree on the practicalities of sessions.
I encourage decision making and empowerment for all young people with whom I work. I approach any contact I have with the parent according to individual cases and depending upon the nature of what the young person is bringing to therapy.
Counselling for children and young adults
Growing up can be really hard. There are so many pressures on young people today: to behave a certain way; fit in with friends and family members; to look a certain way; explore sexuality; to perform well at school; get good grades in exams; to work out what their future holds after school…and the list goes on. It is perhaps the most challenging time of anybody’s life. Many young people also have to deal with lack of self esteem, bullying, difficult family situations, trauma or the death of a family member or pet.
Sometimes young people just need to talk to somebody in confidence and explore how they are feeling. Many young people benefit from gaining insight into what is going on or what has happened previously in their lives. In some cases, a child or young adult may have a specific mental health diagnosis. Whatever your reason for looking for support, psychotherapy and counselling for children and young people may be helpful to you.
